Shi Kun’s reaction made Zu An profoundly understand the meaning of speaking the most timid words in the fiercest tone.
But could he possibly listen to the other party? Of course not!
So, holding Chu Chuyan, he ran straight towards Shi Kun.
Watching the spearmen surging towards him from behind, Shi Kun felt an urge to kill Zu An.
However, he had no time for anger; he frantically unleashed all his abilities, knowing he would otherwise be instantly overwhelmed by the spearmen.
"Young Master, be careful!" Qiao Xueying split off a few vines, intercepting some of the spearmen rushing towards him. Her wood-element cultivation technique was proving more effective against these high-defense undead creatures, likely because wood contains the power of life, which provides a certain counter to the undead.
Although Shi Kun's raging wind blades were powerful, the zombie spearmen had little flesh left and carried shields, leaving him feeling restricted in his attacks.
He mused that if he was struggling this much, Zu An, who was far weaker, must surely be dead by now.
Zu An's potential death was inconsequential; the crucial thing was Chu Chuyan, whom he held in his arms.
He glanced sideways, and his eyes instantly widened. Zu An's figure had transformed into a series of afterimages, weaving through the ranks of spearmen. Whenever an opportunity arose, he struck swiftly, and a spearman would immediately fall.
"How is this guy's speed and strength comparable to mine now?" Shi Kun was taken aback, but what surprised him even more was that he had personally experienced the spearmen's defenses, yet Zu An was killing them with a single thrust. How could that be!
Wait, a spear?
He suddenly noticed that the spear Zu An held was identical to those carried by the spearmen. He didn't know where Zu An had acquired it, but a sudden idea flashed through his mind, and he urgently shouted to his two companions: "Use the zombies' own weapons! They're surprisingly effective against them!"
With that, he darted forward, picking up a fallen spear from the ground. Although he wasn't proficient with a spear, he found that hitting these zombies, even if it didn't kill them instantly, crippled much of their movement. His overall pressure immediately eased.
This spear possessed such a miraculous effect!
Shi Kun mused, thinking of taking a batch of these spears back with him; they might even be some sort of divine weapon.
Qiao Xueying and the other Rank 4 cultivator quickly followed suit, each finding a spear, and the perilous situation was somewhat alleviated.
Meanwhile, although Zu An had just drawn most of the spearmen towards Shi Kun, a few still pursued him relentlessly. Five spearmen arrayed themselves and began to encircle the pair.
"Put me down," Chu Chuyan said weakly.
Zu An shook his head, silently conveying his refusal.
Annoyed and anxious, Chu Chuyan had to explain: "With so many zombie spearmen, holding me is inconvenient for you. Just put me down in a corner for now. Once you've driven them back, then... then you can carry me away."
"Ah, I misunderstood," Zu An said with a sudden smile. He gently placed her in a corner, propped against the wall, then turned back to face the five approaching spearmen and charged directly at them.
His Sunflower Phantoms were utilized to their fullest. The dagger in his hand traced a blur as he stabbed. Before the spearmen could fully encircle him, he exploited the narrow gaps between their shields, striking each one in what felt like an instant.
However, his previous experiences had taught him that the dagger's instant-kill ability wouldn't work on these creatures. Therefore, he didn't pause his movements, continuously attacking their vital points across their bodies.
"Attack their heads," Chu Chuyan advised from the side. Although she no longer cared about her own life or death, she didn't want Zu An to die here because of her.
As Brightmoon City's foremost prodigy, her combat insight and knowledge of the world's myriad life forms vastly exceeded Zu An's current understanding.
Zu An grunted in acknowledgment. His dagger, moving with uncanny precision, stabbed a spearman's neck at an impossible angle. Then, his primal energy abruptly flared, and with a swift slice, the spearman's head flew off.
Its headless body instantly seemed to go blind, wildly swinging its spear in all directions. It then coincidentally stabbed a nearby comrade.
That comrade let out a wail and retaliated with a thrust of his own spear, piercing the other's chest. Both collapsed, eliminated.
"Use... the spears, use *their* spears..." Chu Chuyan's beautiful eyes lit up as her weak yet urgent voice came forth.
Zu An slapped his forehead. He had been so foolish. Since the arrows he had previously found from this army could effectively counter zombies, their weapons must obviously possess the same power.
Compared to other weapons that required destroying the opponent's head, these spears were far more convenient; merely piercing their bodies was enough to eliminate them.
Just then, another spearman lunged. Zu An swiftly dodged to the side, then seized the spear shaft and yanked it towards himself, shouting, "Let go!"
The spearman stumbled, but still held firmly onto its weapon. Man and zombie stared each other down, inexplicably engaging in a tug-of-war, which added a comical touch to the dangerous and bizarre battlefield.
Just then, two more spearmen lunged at him, one from the left and one from the right.
Just as Zu An's hand was entangled and he was about to be struck down by the combined attack, he suddenly raised his arm, and a sleeve arrow shot directly into the head of the man he was in a tug-of-war with.
The Zombie Spearman: "..."
What about the tug-of-war? Are you a sore loser? Are you a sore loser?!
Rage points from the Spearman +666!
Zu An was instantly amused. So these spearmen had developed a certain level of intelligence. It seemed he could earn rage points again. The only pity was that their intelligence was still quite primitive, making the rage points contributed by a single one rather insignificant.
However, if their intelligence were truly high, they would likely be much harder to deal with.
While pondering this, he yanked the spear from the zombie, then, with a flash, darted forward like a silver dragon emerging from the sea, striking the spearmen approaching from both sides before they could react.
After dispatching the five spearmen, Zu An turned back, a look of delight on his face as he prepared to share the good news with Chu Chuyan, but then he was utterly terrified.
Three axe-wielding warriors had reached her side and were already striking at her, yet Chu Chuyan's expression remained utterly calm; she hadn't made a single sound.
He dared not delay. He grabbed a zombie's spear and immediately hurled it, impaling one of the axe-wielding warriors. Then, he raised his arm and shot another with a sleeve arrow.
Finally, he pushed his movements to the absolute limit, blocking the last axe warrior's descending blow at the very last second before impaling the creature with his spear. He then frantically checked Chu Chuyan from head to toe, asking, "Are you hurt anywhere? Why didn't you cry for help?"
"You were also in danger just now, and I didn't want to distract you. Besides, I'm already dying; an earlier or later death makes no difference," Chu Chuyan replied, her face slightly flushed. "Also, could you please stop touching me?"
Zu An looked sheepish and quickly pulled back his hand. "I was just checking for injuries, not trying to take advantage."
Chu Chuyan simply hummed in acknowledgment, saying nothing further.
At this point, the spearmen nearby witnessed the gruesome fate of their comrades and collectively turned their attention, charging towards Zu An.
A rough count revealed about thirty to forty of them!
Chu Chuyan's delicate features subtly shifted. "Put me down, quickly!"
"No, with this many charging, I can't fully block them. I'll have to rely on my movement technique to evade. Leaving you here would be certain death," Zu An replied, shaking his head. Given Chu Chuyan's silence when she was just in danger, he certainly wasn't going to leave her alone here again.
Having said that, he wrapped one arm around her slender body and, with the spear in his other hand, charged straight into the group of spearmen. He had to act preemptively, or they would be in serious trouble once encircled.
His movements were erratic, and the spear in his hand appeared and vanished unpredictably. Many spearmen fell dead, struck by his spear, before they could even react.
Chu Chuyan grew anxious. "Holding me not only ties up one of your hands but also affects your speed and agility. Wielding a spear with one hand is awkward and will rapidly deplete your primal energy. You'll surely die if this continues!"
"It's not as if I haven't fought while holding you before. I'm always been tough and won't die that easily," Zu An replied with a smile. "What I'm most grateful for right now is that my wife isn't a fat pig. Your body is incredibly light and soft; otherwise, fighting while carrying you wouldn't be nearly this easy."
"You're the fat pig," Chu Chuyan retorted with a playful glare. Nevertheless, a hint of worry flickered in her brow. While the journey had been dangerous, the enemies they had faced previously were nothing compared to these dense ranks of spearmen.
Yet, Zu An's strength truly astonished her. Even while holding her, he moved like a phantom, and every thrust of his spear killed a zombie.
She pondered that his current speed and strength were already comparable to her own at full power. No, with his bizarre movement technique, she realized she might not be his match even without using elemental power.
After successively killing twenty-three spearmen, Zu An's pace gradually slowed, and he was heavily panting. Holding a person with one arm and wielding a spear with the other was indeed an immense drain. His right hand was now aching, occasionally accompanied by a tingling numbness.
The situation clearly drew the attention of the other spearmen, and an increasing number began to abandon Shi Kun's group and charge towards Zu An.
Damn it, is my ability to provoke even irresistible to zombies?
Zu An couldn't help but curse loudly, "Brother Rib, you normally brag enough to shake the heavens. Now's the time to actually be strong! They're all coming for me!"
Shi Kun couldn't help but hurl curses back, his usual gentle demeanor completely gone. "Damn it, we were clearly holding back most of the spearmen just now! How long has it been, and you're already whining?"
The thought that he was doing the hardest work and taking the heaviest blows, while this fellow was holding the goddess of his dreams and seemingly flirting, then trying to claim all the credit, made Shi Kun feel utterly choked with indignation.
Rage points from Shi Kun +999!
Zu An, however, had no time to check the rage points he'd received. He tightened his left arm, holding Chu Chuyan a little closer, then wielded his spear and charged to meet them.
However, both the speed of his movement technique and the power of his spear thrusts had significantly decreased.
He had just impaled a spearman and hadn't even had time to withdraw his spear when another spear, like a venomous snake, darted towards Chu Chuyan. Clearly, these zombies had also realized she was his vulnerability.
Zu An gritted his teeth, instantly twisting his body to shield Chu Chuyan from the spear thrust.
*Thwack!*
The spear tore into flesh. Zu An's vision blurred; he was already severely injured to maintain his berserk state, and this new wound nearly made him lose consciousness.
"A'Zu!" Chu Chuyan gasped, a flicker of panic entering her usually composed voice.
Zu An forced a blood-streaked smile. "I'm literally risking my life to impress you. Have you ever considered marrying me?"
