Volume 10: War in the Demon Realm
“Don’t panic. Tell me in detail what happened,” Han Li said, opening his eyes with a flicker of surprise.
Even with the mix of humans and demons at the Myriad Treasures Convention, it was highly unusual for something to occur so openly.
“Master, my junior martial brother and I had already found the demonic elder you were looking for. But on our way back, as we passed a secluded corner, we suddenly encountered a woman. She merely glanced at Junior Martial Brother Qi Lingzi twice before unleashing a strange gust of wind and abducting him out of thin air!” Hai Dashao, seeing Han Li’s composure, calmed down and respectfully explained.
“What did this woman look like? Did she have any distinguishing features?” This truly surprised Han Li, and a cold glint flashed in his eyes as he asked.
“She was tall and thin, an old woman with unusually long hair. Oh, and she had a large green mole on her forehead and exuded a dark, terrifying aura. Also, before leaving, she struck me with a palm, knocking me unconscious. I was later rescued by another group of cultivators passing by, which is how I was able to come to you for help, Master,” Hai Dashao recounted with great indignation.
“She struck you with a palm? Come closer and let me examine you,” Han Li said, his heart stirring as he beckoned Hai Dashao forward.
“As you command!” Hai Dashao was startled but immediately stepped forward without a word.
“Just as I suspected! What a malicious scheme!” Han Li’s face instantly showed anger after his spiritual sense thoroughly swept through Hai Dashao’s body.
Then, he raised his arm and grabbed Hai Dashao’s arm. A green light flickered between his fingers and surged into Hai Dashao’s body.
Moments later, a thin black thread, encased in a ball of green light, was forcibly pulled from Hai Dashao’s body.
As soon as the black thread left Hai Dashao’s body, it wriggled desperately within the green light, revealing itself to be a strange, unknown insect.
Hai Dashao’s face naturally turned ashen at this sight, filled with both shock and anger.
“What is this thing? Was it that woman who did this to me?”
“Hmph, who else could it be? This insect is called a Heart-Clinging Thread, a relatively rare demonic insect. When first hatched, it’s as thick as a chopstick. But after being caught and refined by cultivators skilled in insect manipulation, its body gradually thins until it becomes invisible to the naked eye, signifying true mastery of its refinement. It’s used to control enemies, colorless and shapeless, making it impossible to guard against. Once it drills into the body, it will penetrate the host’s heart at noon, causing instant death. Afterward, it’s very difficult to determine the cause of death. Although this Heart-Clinging Thread hasn’t been refined to mastery, it has still cost its owner at least several hundred years of painstaking effort. To use it on a mid-level body refiner like you, she must be quite ruthless!” Han Li scoffed, explaining to Hai Dashao.
“What was that woman’s intention? If she wanted to silence me, why didn’t she just kill me directly? Why all these theatrics?” Hai Dashao looked at the black thread-like insect in the green light, his face paling as he swallowed hard, but he couldn’t help but ask.
“When she was about to act against you, did you say anything?” Han Li was silent for a moment before suddenly asking a seemingly unrelated question.
“Say anything? Oh, I think I shouted, ‘We live in the Immortal Welcome Palace!’ Could it be because of that, she didn’t dare to directly harm me?” Hai Dashao blinked, looking somewhat surprised.
“Likely. But she couldn’t be sure if what you said was true or false, so she used this Heart-Clinging Thread to test you. If noon passed and this demonic insect wasn’t discovered and removed, you would have died instantly from a pierced heart. If you truly had a connection with an Integration-stage cultivator, it would also be hard to conceal. Once the worm was expelled, she would sense it and be on guard. As for why she didn’t directly kill you, it’s naturally out of fear of the law enforcement cultivators at the Myriad Treasures Convention. They aren’t just decorations; private disputes might be overlooked, but if someone openly tries to kill another, the law enforcement cultivators would absolutely not stand idly by,” Han Li said calmly, gazing at the black thread-like insect in the green light.
Hai Dashao finally understood completely.
Just then, the black thread in the green light suddenly trembled. After a surge of black light around its body, it forcefully broke free from the green light and shot away.
Han Li’s mouth moved slightly, and he made a grasping motion in the air with one hand. An invisible immense force enveloped the fleeing thread.
With a whoosh, the black thread was instantly pulled back, like a crossbow bolt shot in reverse.
Han Li then rubbed his hands together expressionlessly, and a silver flame materialized and swirled in his palm.
The Heart-Clinging Thread instantly turned to ash in the silver flame.
Even if the demonic insect had some power, how could it withstand the burning of this fire?
Almost simultaneously with the black thread’s disappearance, deep within a small mountain outside Nine Immortal Mountain, a gray-haired old woman with unusually long, dark fingernails suddenly awoke from her meditation. Her face turned pale, and she spat out a mouthful of bright red blood, her vitality seemingly severely damaged.
“Madam, are you alright?”
An old man with thick black eyebrows sat beside her, asking in great alarm.
“Why are you panicking? It’s just that my Heart-Clinging Thread was destroyed. I’ll be fine after two days of meditation,” the old woman said coldly through gritted teeth.
“It’s good that you’re fine!” Although the old man knew in his heart that the Heart-Clinging Thread had been cultivated by the woman for a thousand years, and its destruction couldn’t possibly be so simple, he dared not say more under her glare, like a mouse seeing a cat.
“It seems what that young man said was true. They really do have some connection with an old monster from the Immortal Welcome Palace,” the old woman muttered to herself, her expression shifting uncertainly, once the old man fell silent.
“Perhaps we should release that young man! After all, he’s connected to an Integration-stage cultivator. We’ll be in big trouble if we provoke them,” the black-browed old man mumbled.
“Release him? Why release him? At our age, we only have one son, Ming’er. As long as we use the secret technique taught by that person to transfer the inherited artifact into Ming’er’s body, not only will it cure his chronic illness with its inherited spiritual energy, but he’ll also gain a complete set of inherited secret techniques for free. I’ve already examined the inherited treasure bead in that young man’s body; its surface seal is incredibly profound, indicating that this inherited cultivation method is absolutely extraordinary. Once Ming’er obtains it, his path of cultivation will undoubtedly take him much further than us. If we miss this opportunity, where else would we find two fellow cultivators with inherited artifacts?” The old woman’s face was somewhat distorted as she spoke fiercely.
“But that Integration-stage old monster behind him… two Void Refinement stage cultivators like us can never handle him,” the black-browed old man still appeared very apprehensive.
“Hmph, that young man is merely a Foundation Establishment cultivator, and his spiritual roots are so ordinary. Even if he has some connection with that Integration-stage old monster, it won’t be a deep one. As long as we also find a powerful backer, will that old monster truly make trouble for us over a mere Foundation Establishment cultivator? At worst, we’ll just pay a price and try our best to offer enough compensation,” the old woman seemed to have considered this already, speaking with unusual calm.
“Madam means, to go find…” The black-browed old man immediately realized something and asked, startled.
“Exactly! Don’t forget, my surname is also Long. The Long family patriarch is my birth father. We will leave immediately and stay at the Immortal Welcome Palace, where the Long family currently resides, for a period of time.” The woman stated.
“But according to the Long family rules, once a woman marries out, she is no longer considered part of the Long family. Otherwise, my father-in-law wouldn’t have ignored our family all these years. Madam, I suggest we just drop this matter,” the old man, clearly more rational, advised with a wry smile.
“That’s right. Women of our Long family cannot activate the True Dragon Bloodline, so naturally, we are not highly regarded. But don’t forget, Ming’er carries the Long family bloodline, and you and I personally confirmed the True Dragon Bloodline within him last time. Although it’s a bit thin, if I tell my elder brother about this, he won’t just sit idly by,” the woman said through gritted teeth.
“Madam, didn’t we agree not to tell your Long family about the True Dragon Bloodline in Ming’er? Have you changed your mind again!” The black-browed old man’s face darkened upon hearing the old woman’s words.
“I know you, husband, want Ming’er to carry on the Li family’s lineage and don’t want him to return to the Long family. But hasn’t the situation changed now? If we don’t use this method, Ming’er’s lifespan will only be a mere few hundred years. Can you truly bear that?” The woman was silent for a while before saying coldly.
“I…” The old man’s lips moved a few times, but in the end, he said nothing more.
“Alright, this matter isn’t unsalvageable. Don’t mention anything about that young man to my elder brother for now. If that Integration-stage old monster doesn’t come looking for us, it means that young man is insignificant. We’ll quietly leave the Long family after the Myriad Treasures Convention ends. This way, perhaps Ming’er won’t even need to leave our side,” the old woman, seeing the old man’s dejected expression, felt a slight pang of sympathy and offered some comfort.
“Madam, why deceive me? How could Ming’er hide the activation of his True Dragon Bloodline from your elder brother’s eyes?” The old man said, shaking his head.
Hearing the old man say this, the old woman’s face twitched a few times, and she was momentarily speechless.
“Alright, everything will be done as Madam says. For Ming’er’s future, returning to the Long family is fine. Ming’er possessing the True Dragon Bloodline will indeed be a hundred times better for him in the Long family than staying with us,” the old man said, his expression changing for a moment before suddenly gritting his teeth.
“Husband, this decision is absolutely correct. As far as I know, not many in this generation of the Long family have activated the True Dragon Bloodline. Ming’er will definitely be highly valued once he goes there,” the old woman was naturally even more overjoyed.
