Chapter 987: One Sword Cuts Through Eternity

A magnificent and grand city, emerald green, but entirely constructed of wood. Such an imposing wooden city was incredibly rare; at least, no one present had ever seen one before.

Chu Feng glanced at Hong Xuan and Fairy Feiling, noticing that their faces also showed surprise and unease. Even descendants of Heavenly Venerates from the Yang Realm reacted this way, highlighting the city's formidable and extraordinary nature.

"Little brothers and sisters, has any of you ever seen such an ancient city in the Yang Realm?" Chu Feng asked.

The geniuses from the Yang Realm felt annoyed. "You, a native of a broken universe, dare to call us 'little brothers and sisters'?" This was particularly irritating for the talented women, who were accustomed to being called "fairies." To be called "little sisters" now was simply outrageous! What kind of decorum was this?

However, they had no intention of falling out with him yet. They decided to wait until they left this trial ground, unwilling to pay the price of breaking their promise now.

There were no such magnificent wooden cities in the Yang Realm. Some present came from Heavenly Venerate sects, and their knowledge was naturally extraordinary. Yet, this colossal city built from green wood felt somewhat eerie and its origins were unclear.

Who would willingly use wood? A single celestial fire could burn it to ashes.

"This city is quite strange, Junior Sister Feiling, what do you make of it?" Hong Xuan asked, his silver robe fluttering, enveloped in sacred white light and shimmering motes, appearing utterly ethereal.

He smiled, his teeth gleaming white, his demeanor as gentle as jade.

Feiling smiled sweetly at him and replied, "I seem to recall seeing a partial drawing in a very ancient manuscript, but the memory is a bit hazy."

These two, whose knowledge surpassed everyone else's, began conversing amongst themselves, completely ignoring Chu Feng.

Hong Xuan nodded, saying, "Hmm, if I'm not mistaken, this place is extraordinary. It might be connected to a crucial point in a very ancient period of evolution, perhaps even a divergence in the history of evolution."

People from the broken universe and the Lesser Netherworld Realm frowned. Although they heard that something remarkable was involved, they ultimately did not understand the underlying implications.

Chu Feng was different. Having spent a considerable amount of time with the Stone Fox, he was well aware of certain old secrets. The so-called "divergence in the history of evolution" was truly terrifying.

At several key points, during supremely brilliant ancient eras, the path of evolution had diverged. The path they currently followed was merely one of these branches.

By logical deduction, there should have been even more terrifying paths at certain junctures. But where did the radiant splendor of those evolutionary civilizations shine?

A few other geniuses from the Yang Realm also gasped, clearly having vaguely heard of these secrets, though they didn't know the specifics.

Chu Feng pondered for a moment, then cautiously approached the city to investigate its mysteries. The tall wooden city walls appeared to be a single, seamless entity, not constructed from pieced-together parts.

This was quite strange; what kind of massive ancient tree could this be? Its grain was clear, flecked with green, and it emitted a faint, ancient glow.

He had already tried; the city was extraordinarily durable. Not only could Sacred Artifacts not damage it, but even a divine-grade battle sword he quietly drew failed to leave a mark.

As for Hong Xuan, Feiling, and the others, they were also exploring. The possibility of this being related to a divergence in civilization or another direction of evolution naturally stirred their emotions, making them eager to gain something from it.

"Cross the wooden city, and this body shall be immortal, the soul light eternal, to become a Celestial Immortal." Chu Feng read the words on the city wall, then turned to Hong Xuan and the others, saying, "Your elders are quite perverse. Even if they are deities, can they cross this city? They actually sent us here for a trial."

As a divine general himself, he already sensed that the city was terrifying. An inexplicable halo emanated from it, causing him unease.

Once near the city, flight became impossible!

This was a very bad omen. For Chu Feng, a peak-level divine general, to be unable to fly indicated something terrifying; there was an inexplicable suppression here.

He levitated in the distance and gazed forward. The city's interior was shrouded in darkness. The city itself seemed infinitely vast, stretching back to the primordial universe, with no end in sight.

Moments later, Chu Feng carefully climbed onto the city wall. What he saw shocked him to his core.

Only from the city wall could anything be clearly observed!

At this point, seeing his audacity, Hong Xuan, Feiling, and the others also followed, standing on the city wall.

Inside the city, there were temporal turbulences, fragments of time, and various floating prehistoric traces, delivering a massive shock to their minds.

Time fragments surged and swirled, like a river of years truncated, pierced through, and imprisoned there. That area was shrouded in mist, as if connected to a world from an endlessly distant past. It seemed one could trace back into that ancient era and world from where the time fragments danced.

Furthermore, there were some wooden palaces, all half-destroyed and incomplete, yet possessing a crystalline luster.

"What am I seeing? Is that the Tree of Origin?!" Feiling felt her soul tremble.

Within the immense city, half of an ancient tree floated, majestic and colossal. Its rough branches stretched across a vast expanse, occupying a significant amount of space.

The half-tree had only a few leaves, yet each leaf supported an entire planet.

To what extent did the battle of that year escalate? This was the Tree of Origin, a primordial treasure plant that grew even in chaos, possessing infinite power!

It was said that a great power from a super ancient era in the Yang Realm once refined a small sapling. Wielding it, they could sweep away everything under heaven, forcing all foes to retreat and leaving Heavenly Venerates slain, with none daring to contend.

This item was also known as the Tree of Order, capable of amplifying one's energy and divine abilities to unleash an invincible strike!

Chu Feng looked repeatedly, concluding that he had no immediate way to cross this city.

In fact, the inscription on the city wall indicated that crossing it would make one a Celestial Immortal!

However, failure would likely mean never being reincarnated again.

Chu Feng sighed, estimating that the trial might end in failure.

Since that was the case, he was tempted to eliminate Hong Xuan and the others right then, just to collect some interest first.

However, it wasn't the final critical moment yet, so he wasn't in a hurry to act.

Afterwards, people dispersed, walking along the city wall, exploring and searching the surroundings.

Chu Feng left these people, including Yuan Mo and Zǐ Luan, and found a spot to descend underground. He wanted to get closer to the city's foundation and observe it.

This descent immediately brought danger. Even he, a formidable divine general, was nearly annihilated, let alone others.

He retreated swiftly, having been prepared, and narrowly escaped by immediately hiding inside the stone box!

He was astonished to discover that the so-called foundation beneath the city was peculiar, possessing a strange and terrifying "momentum" that nearly shattered him!

Even while hidden in the stone box, he felt waves of trepidation. This had never happened before; even when traversing the perilous Chaotic Sea, it hadn't been this intense.

This was not energy, but purely a strange "momentum."

Terrified, he retreated inside the stone box, then submerged deeper, entering the deepest part of the earth layer to investigate thoroughly.

In the end, he was truly shocked; he had discovered a horrifying truth!

There was no foundation at all. After descending a certain distance underground, it was completely empty; there were no city foundations whatsoever!

"This is a ruined city, severed by someone?!"

Chu Feng was greatly shaken, finding it hard to believe.

He clearly remembered the inscription on the city wall: crossing this city meant reaching a supreme, immortal, and indestructible state. That evaluation was simply too high!

But who could have imagined that it had already been severed?

Upon closer inspection, the entire city appeared to have been sliced in half by a single sword stroke. The lower half was nowhere to be seen, leaving only the upper portion, which sat here, partly buried in the earth, thus still resembling a complete city.

The cut surface was flat and smooth, yet it contained a terrifying "momentum," permeated with an aura capable of suppressing the past, present, and future!

Indeed, when Chu Feng threw a divine-grade short spear, it silently disintegrated into dust before the cut surface at the bottom of the ancient city.

Within a certain range, everything would be suppressed and crumble.

"This sword stroke seems to have severed eternity! I'm still terrified even when hidden in the stone box, it's too horrifying!" Chu Feng's expression was extremely serious.

He retreated and simultaneously submerged deeper. The pressure immediately lessened. He now knew how to cross the entire wooden city. Although it would be a trick, completing the trial would not be an issue.

By descending far enough, the so-called cut surface and the "grand momentum" of that sword strike, which suppressed past, present, and future, would not affect him.

"Hmm, what's that?!"

A page of a letter?

Chu Feng's pupils constricted as he stared beneath the city.

It was incredibly vast here, like a cosmic grand canyon after being severed by a sword. Temporal turbulences surged and swirled, accompanied by a yellowed piece of letter paper.

This was truly absurd. Time fragments and spatial turbulences were enough to shred deities, yet that piece of letter paper, whose origin was unknown, though yellowed with age, still floated perfectly intact.

Just then, Chu Feng suddenly heard a sound, like a great bell, deafening and awakening, as if an epiphany, cleansing even his soul.

"One day, you will come..."

It seemed to emanate from eons past, carrying an aura of infinite antiquity, shaking the entire space-time!

Chu Feng was somewhat dazed. Who was speaking?

Then, he saw the yellowed letter paper glowing, its light intensifying, with ancient characters on it appearing to come alive and pulsate.

However, he didn't recognize them at all.

Those characters seemed like carriers of the Great Dao, and also seemed to embody entire swathes of ancient time, truly terrifying.

Next, he saw a figure, a person, erupting there, manifesting a scene from billions of years ago!
