Concubine Yunxia was startled. Not only was she strongly against it, but Jiang Fan was also right there in the Spirit Pool. There was no way she could agree.
“Yunxia has finished bathing and will now get dressed,” she said. “Demon Emperor, please look away.”
Her face was impassive, her tone frigid, leaving no room for any ambiguity with the Demon Emperor.
The Demon Emperor’s face stiffened slightly, and his expression flickered erratically. It was obvious he was furious. Yet, for some unknown reason, he restrained himself. After a long moment, he suppressed his anger and sighed:
“Yunxia, it’s been so many years,” he said. “How much longer will you reject me? You spent only a few days with Jiang Fan, a mere human captive, yet you developed feelings for him and even defied my orders to let him go. Do you truly feel nothing for all the effort I’ve put in over the years?”
The mention of Jiang Fan made Concubine Yunxia’s heart quicken. She felt intensely guilty. She had told one lie, but now it felt like she needed a hundred more to cover it up. Originally, there had been nothing between her and Jiang Fan, but now it was impossible to explain away the situation.
Maintaining her cold demeanor, she replied, “If it concerns official demon clan matters, Yunxia is happy to speak with the Demon Emperor. But if it’s about these irrelevant private matters, the Demon Emperor need not say more.”
The Demon Emperor’s face darkened. His attempt to play the emotional card was completely shut down by Concubine Yunxia.
“Yunxia, what do I have to do for you to accept me?” he pressed.
Concubine Yunxia replied indifferently, “What the Demon Emperor says, Yunxia does not understand.”
Just as she was fending off the Demon Emperor, Jiang Fan’s silent telepathic message suddenly echoed in her mind.
“Concubine Yunxia, what exactly is your relationship with the Demon Emperor?” he asked. “It doesn’t sound like you’re husband and wife.” He had long felt their relationship was subtle, but now it truly seemed amiss. Concubine Yunxia seemed highly resistant to the Demon Emperor, and the dignified Demon Emperor appeared helpless against her.
Concubine Yunxia was startled and immediately scolded him telepathically: “Are you trying to die? How dare you speak to me at a time like this? What if the Demon Emperor finds out?!”
Jiang Fan helplessly replied, “I’m just reminding you to make it quick. I’m almost out of breath.”
He wasn’t an aquatic demon, nor did he possess a water-repelling artifact. Hidden in the spirit liquid, he was relying solely on holding his breath to avoid detection. Only then did Concubine Yunxia realize that Jiang Fan couldn't hold his breath for too long. If he was exposed, it would be catastrophic!
“Demon Emperor, please withdraw!” Concubine Yunxia said coldly, a clear expression of displeasure on her face.
The Demon Emperor’s face darkened further. He calmly refastened his jade belt and ascended into the air. Before leaving, he glanced at the spirit liquid splashed everywhere on the shore, his eyes narrowing, then vanished, feigning nonchalance.
Concubine Yunxia breathed a slight sigh of relief and was about to tell him to get out quickly. Then, Jiang Fan's silent telepathic message once again came into her mind. “Don’t speak,” it said.
“The Demon Emperor might not have left,” he conveyed. “He’s a suspicious person, and this place is so messy; he must have doubts.”
Concubine Yunxia’s heart skipped a beat. Indeed, the Demon Emperor was exactly that kind of person. She pretended to be unaware, lying in the Spirit Pool, letting out a long sigh as if relieved, while in her mind, she was fuming.
“Jiang Fan! Look what you’ve done!” she raged telepathically. “I haven’t done anything, yet you’ve made it seem like… like I’ve done something to betray the Demon Emperor.” She felt incredibly wronged. If Jiang Fan were to be dragged out of the Spirit Pool by the Demon Emperor, any explanation from Concubine Yunxia would seem utterly hollow. It would be a case where she would be presumed guilty, regardless of the truth.
Jiang Fan scoffed, “Isn’t this your fault? If you had let me leave earlier, wouldn’t all this trouble have been avoided? You just had to drag it out until the Demon Emperor arrived.”
Concubine Yunxia angrily retorted, “You have the nerve to bring that up? If you hadn’t been practicing your cultivation technique and ended up in my bathing area, would things have turned out like this? I’m telling you, sooner or later, I’m going to kill you!”
She desperately wanted a world without Jiang Fan.
However, no sooner had the words left her mind than her expression changed. Her thigh had suddenly been pinched. Fortunately, having been touched by Jiang Fan twice before, she had developed some immunity and didn’t cry out in surprise. In her mind, she raged with shame and anger: “Jiang Fan! What are you doing? Touch me one more time, and we both die!”
Jiang Fan scoffed, “Everyone says you’re gentle, but where exactly are you gentle? You’re constantly agitated, either throwing a tantrum or about to. Who was blind enough to say you’re gentle?”
Concubine Yunxia was too angry to speak. Why had she become like this? Wasn’t it all because of that bastard?
At this moment, she only wanted to get away from Jiang Fan quickly. “How much longer can you hold your breath?” she asked.
“Less than a minute,” Jiang Fan transmitted. “The Demon Emperor had better leave within a minute, otherwise…”
Concubine Yunxia’s heart sank. Knowing Jiang Fan couldn't hold on much longer, she grew anxious. The only solution now was for her to leave the bath; only then would the Demon Emperor dispel his doubts.
“Close your eyes,” she instructed.
“What for?” he asked.
“To get dressed.”
“Are they closed?” she pressed.
“Mm-hmm,” he replied.
“How many fingers am I holding up?” she tested.
“Three…”
“Jiang Fan!” Concubine Yunxia cried in humiliated anger, “You’re shameless!”
Jiang Fan clicked his tongue. “Alright, alright, I won’t look,” he said. “I’ve touched you more than once, and now I’m not even allowed to look.”
Concubine Yunxia’s chest throbbed faintly. She needed to find a place far from Jiang Fan to cultivate her temperament; if this continued, she would truly fall ill from anger.
Gritting her teeth, and ignoring whether Jiang Fan was peeking, she withdrew her jade hand that had been tightly clasped over her chest. She was about to telekinetically pull her robes to drape over herself.
Without any warning, the Demon Emperor’s faint voice echoed from behind her.
“Yunxia, are you bathing alone?”
That voice nearly scared Concubine Yunxia out of her wits. She turned her head to see the Demon Emperor standing with his arms crossed, his eyes narrowed as he peered into the bottomless Spirit Pool.
Concubine Yunxia’s heart pounded wildly. Jiang Fan had been right; the Demon Emperor was indeed suspicious. Fortunately, with Jiang Fan’s warning, she managed not to show any panic.
With a slightly cold expression, she asked, “Demon Emperor, what do you mean?”
“Exactly what it means!” the Demon Emperor replied indifferently.
Immediately, his body vibrated, and a Nascent Soul aura swept across the Spirit Pool. Except for the area around Concubine Yunxia, the rest of the water in the pool was under the immense pressure of the Nascent Soul aura. Not to mention a hidden person, even a hidden insect would be vibrated to death.
In an instant, half of Jiang Fan’s body was crushed by the Nascent Soul aura, causing excruciating pain. Moreover, the aura continued to intensify, threatening to crush Jiang Fan's body until it cracked and bled. If that happened, he would truly be exposed.
In this critical moment, a pair of jade hands suddenly, without a sound, pulled Jiang Fan close. When Jiang Fan regained his senses, he found himself held in Concubine Yunxia's arms, like a princess being carried.
The milky-white spirit liquid blocked the Demon Emperor’s sight, so he didn't see Concubine Yunxia’s movement. His attention was focused on the areas outside Concubine Yunxia. The Nascent Soul aura he released grew stronger and stronger, making the Spirit Pool boil and churn with large bubbles. Little did he know, Jiang Fan was currently held tightly in Concubine Yunxia’s embrace, completely unaffected by the Nascent Soul aura’s oppression.
Jiang Fan was a little bewildered. He felt something soft against his face and, twisting slightly, realized he was pressed against her chest.
“Don’t move!” Concubine Yunxia’s voice, full of shy anger, echoed in his mind. “Move again, and we both die!”
Jiang Fan dared not move, obediently pressing his face back against her chest.
