The Nine Sects had no girl who could instill such fear in the chief of the Myriad Sword Sect. This girl was none other than Liu Qingxian's archenemy, Nangong Xiaoyun—the very girl who had suffered two consecutive defeats at Liu Qingxian's hands.
Jiang Fan didn't know whether to laugh or cry. "Who provoked this little firecracker this time? What made her so furious?" He remembered her being incredibly arrogant even when she was with Grandmaster Youyun. Now that Grandmaster Youyun wasn't around, it was truly a case of the cat being away and the mice playing.
"Junior Brother Jiang, are you scared?" Liang Feiyan asked with a soft chuckle. "Don't worry, I arrived in Sunset City early and have dealt with her several times. As long as your mission rank isn't too low, she'll give me some face and won't make things difficult for you."
Hearing this, Xia Chaoge bowed slightly and said, "On behalf of my Martial Uncle, I thank Senior Brother Liang." Her brow was slightly furrowed. She was quite worried that Jiang Fan's mission rank might be too low. She naturally had faith in Jiang Fan's strength. After all, he had single-handedly defeated all the prodigies of the Azure Cloud Sect. With the exception of herself, the chief of the Grand Supreme Sect, who hadn't entered the fray, every other elite disciple of their generation had suffered a crushing defeat.
With such power, taking on a Tier 1 mission would be no problem at all. The real concern was whether the Azure Cloud Sect Master would, for some inexplicable reason, assign him a Tier 3 mission again. If that happened, Nangong Xiaoyun would undoubtedly unleash a torrent of abuse. Nangong Xiaoyun's temperament was truly difficult to describe. In all of Sunset City, only the Vice Pavilion Master stationed there could manage her. Everyone else gave her a wide berth. She was a veritable little tyrant. But now, with Liang Feiyan stepping forward, there was no need to worry. He was one of the few people who could actually talk sense into Nangong Xiaoyun.
Liang Feiyan smiled faintly. "Junior Sister Xia, you're too kind. Since he's your Martial Uncle, he's naturally a friend of mine too." He couldn't help but feel a surge of pride. 'Martial Uncle or not, he still needs my help just to get registered,' he thought. He didn't care about the thanks. What he cared about was subtly outshining Jiang Fan.
Jiang Fan was about to mention that he knew Nangong Xiaoyun, but Liang Feiyan urged him forward, bringing them to the front of the command post. Nangong Xiaoyun stood there, scowling, with her arms crossed over her rather flat chest. Her eyes glared angrily. Sensing someone approach, she didn't even glance up, merely huffing, "Don't bother me with any mission below Tier 1!"
Jiang Fan rubbed his nose. This little princess was truly lawless. Her temper was absolutely boundless. Xia Chaoge also began to worry slightly. It seemed Nangong Xiaoyun was in a worse mood today than ever before. Jiang Fan shouldn't risk incurring her wrath and getting a furious dressing-down. That would be quite embarrassing. She glanced around. Many people, startled by the commotion, were casting gloating glances their way.
Liang Feiyan also noticed that Nangong Xiaoyun's temper was uncharacteristically fiery today. He was tempted to back off, but since he had already spoken, he had no choice but to push forward. He cupped his hands and said, "Senior Sister Nangong, it's me, Liang Feiyan."
Nangong Xiaoyun spared him a glance, her anger subsiding slightly, but her face remained stern. "What do you want?"
Liang Feiyan replied, "I have a friend who wishes to request a spirit beast."
Nangong Xiaoyun extended her palm. "Hand me the jade slip."
Seeing this, Liang Feiyan breathed a sigh of relief. From her tone, it seemed Nangong Xiaoyun was still willing to give him some face. Even if the mission wasn't suitable, at least she wouldn't speak harshly. "Junior Brother Jiang, where's the mission jade slip?" Liang Feiyan prompted.
Jiang Fan had already prepared the mission jade slip and calmly placed it into Nangong Xiaoyun's outstretched palm. Nangong Xiaoyun didn't spare the newcomer a single glance. She picked up the jade slip and began to read its contents.
"Investigate and rescue the Taihu patrol team. Mission rank: Tier 1."
Upon finishing, Nangong Xiaoyun slapped the table and shot to her feet. "Finally, someone dares to take on this mission! Who is it? Who's so bold?" Her gaze swept toward Liang Feiyan. Spotting Xia Chaoge, she was momentarily surprised. 'When did she start joining in on the excitement?' she wondered. But then her eyes fell on Jiang Fan, standing beside Xia Chaoge with his hands behind his back, wearing a half-smile. Her eyes widened in shock, and her small mouth gaped open. "Jiang... Jiang Fan?"
This was the new junior brother whom her Master had specifically named to take in. How could she possibly forget him? What truly impressed her was Jiang Fan's unparalleled comprehension and numerous talents. It had once made both her and her Master believe he was an elder of the Azure Cloud Sect.
Jiang Fan chuckled. "Senior Sister Nangong, you certainly have quite a temper."
Nangong Xiaoyun's expression froze instantly, and she looked utterly guilt-ridden. "Junior Brother Jiang, no, it's not what you think! I'm not usually like this. It's just that my beloved spirit beast got injured, and that's why I've been in a bad mood..." But the astonished gazes from all around made Nangong Xiaoyun realize her excuse held no weight. She couldn't help but lower her head, clasping her small hands before her chest, her large eyes welling up. "Junior Brother Jiang, please don't tell Master. If he finds out, he'll rush over from the Heavenly Secret Pavilion to whip me."
The reason she was even here was because Vice Pavilion Master You wanted to temper her character, so he'd sent her to this arduous place. Who would have thought she'd only grown worse? She had become a little tyrant here, causing disciples to groan with complaints. But no matter how much they complained, Nangong Xiaoyun wasn't afraid, because they couldn't even get a word in with Grandmaster Youyun. Jiang Fan, however, was different. He was the future junior brother, a genius in their Master's eyes. He could write to their Master and expose her at any time.
Jiang Fan chuckled. "Your Master is currently busy with something important. Even if he knew, he wouldn't be able to spare the time to find you right away."
Hearing this, Nangong Xiaoyun let out a long sigh of relief. But then she looked at him suspiciously. "You've seen my Master again?"
Jiang Fan nodded. "We just parted ways at the Giant Sect."
Nangong Xiaoyun grew even more wary. She shrank her neck and held up two small fingers to the sky. "Junior Brother Jiang, I swear I'll change. I'll never lose my temper like that again. Starting today, you can supervise me."
The entire place fell into a stunned silence. This fearless little tyrant had actually been subdued? Wasn't Jiang Fan supposed to be the "spirit-rootless" disciple of the Azure Cloud Sect? Where did he get such formidable deterrent power? And judging by Nangong Xiaoyun's tone, he could even speak directly with the elusive Vice Pavilion Master Youyun?
Jiang Fan smiled. "You really should change your temper. Everyone travels thousands of miles to reach the front lines, fighting enemies and undertaking dangerous missions. They're already mentally and physically exhausted. Your harsh words will only lower morale."
Criticized publicly, Nangong Xiaoyun lowered her head in embarrassment, pouting. "But I already swore! I won't do it again. So please, stop talking about it."
Jiang Fan knew when to stop and said nothing further. He said, "Then quickly register my mission. I'm in a hurry to enter the Northern Realm."
Nangong Xiaoyun looked relieved. She quickly leaned over the table and registered Jiang Fan's mission on the golden page of the ledger. "It's registered! I've marked it as a 'Heaven-Rank' mission. Later, my Martial Uncle Zhuang will assign you the highest-grade spirit beast!" After saying this, Nangong Xiaoyun lightly punched Liang Feiyan's chest with her fist. She playfully chided him, "You rascal! You knew my Junior Brother Jiang, why didn't you say so earlier? If you had told me sooner, I would have taken better care of you before!"
