I establish their personalities first, then introduce them at opportune moments—either with a subtle appearance or a grand entrance—as long as they drive the plot forward, that's my aim.

The line between genius and madman is incredibly thin, and if my characters ever blend into the background, it's probably because I've lost my creative spark!
