A Record of a Mortal's Journey to Immortality, Volume 5: Renowned in One Region
"How? Do you know me?" Han Li asked indifferently, a strange glint in his eyes, as he looked at the black-robed old man.
"No, I've mistaken you for someone else. How could a junior like me possibly know Senior?" The black-robed old man shivered under Han Li's icy gaze and stammered out a quick denial.
"Mistaken person!" Han Li rubbed his chin noncommittally. His gaze shifted from the old man and swept over the other few people, as if he genuinely believed the old man's words.
The gray-robed man glanced at the old man, feeling somewhat puzzled. Although equally surprised, he was in a perilous situation and couldn't concern himself with other matters. He just wanted to say some pleasant words to Han Li again and then seize the opportunity to escape.
Han Li, however, didn't wait for him to speak again and slowly said:
"Since you are Ghost Spirit Sect cultivators and have discovered my whereabouts, then consider yourselves unlucky. Your lives are mine!" As soon as these words left his mouth, Han Li's expression turned cold. He flicked his large sleeve, and over ten streams of green sword-light surged out from the cuff. As these sword-lights emerged, they flickered in the wind, transforming into thirty or forty streaks that swept overwhelmingly towards the opponents.
Upon hearing the coldness in Han Li's voice, the gray-robed cultivator already knew things were grim. When he witnessed the astonishing power of Han Li's attack, his face turned even paler, drained of all blood.
He naturally wouldn't just stand there and wait for death. Without thinking, his body spun rapidly, and countless black mists suddenly emerged, shielding him within. Then, a golden and a silver flying trident shot out from the black mist, transforming into two golden and silver monstrous pythons, blocking in front of the black mist. At the same time, the gray-robed cultivator desperately activated his escape technique, turning into a black smoke and fleeing backward, completely disregarding the fate of the black-robed old man and the other cultivators.
The Ghost Spirit Sect cultivators were greatly alarmed. All except the old man were instantly decapitated by the overwhelming sweep of the green sword energy, offering no resistance whatsoever. Just as the old man was filled with terror, Han Li flicked his finger. A thin strand of green silk, intertwined with the sword energy, instantly shot into the old man's body, causing him to immediately fall to the ground.
Seeing this, Han Li no longer paid attention to the old man. His gaze shifted towards the gray-robed cultivator who had already fled over a hundred zhang away, a cold smile playing on his lips.
With a calm gesture, he pointed at the sword-lights. Instantly, over a hundred streaks of green light converged, swiftly solidifying into a gigantic green sword. Then, Han Li softly uttered the word "Go."
The giant sword emitted a low hum. With a shake, it transformed into a ten-zhang-long green rainbow. With incredible speed, it instantly caught up to the black smoke, and dazzling green light burst forth.
The gray-robed cultivator shrieked. Both the golden and silver monstrous pythons formed by the flying tridents and the protective black mist he had conjured were instantly turned to dust by the giant sword's strike. Even the gray-robed cultivator himself was reduced to a shower of blood.
Only then did Han Li calmly recall his magic treasure, his gaze darkening. He turned his attention back to the unconscious old man.
After a brief thought, Han Li instinctively raised one hand, and with a "swoosh," the old man's withered body was drawn into his hand. Green light flickered, and his other hand pressed unceremoniously onto the old man's skull.
After the time it takes to drink a cup of tea, a flame ignited in Han Li's hand, and the old man turned into a heap of ashes in the fire, vanishing into thin air.
"So, it was a discarded disciple of the Joyful Union Sect. Dong Xuan'er! I can't believe she also formed her Golden Core. But why would she send people to look for me? That's truly peculiar." Han Li floated in the air with his hands behind his back, a hint of surprise on his face.
The black-robed old man's background was indeed a bit complex. He was originally a disciple of the Joyful Union Sect. After committing a grave error and violating sect rules, he feared being tortured and having his soul refined, so he changed his name and fled to the Ghost Spirit Sect, where he had been hiding until now.
Han Li naturally didn't care about these matters. What surprised him was that the old man had actually served under Dong Xuan'er for a period, back when Dong Xuan'er had already formed her Golden Core. She had even sent him and other Joyful Union Sect members on a frantic search for Han Li for a while. They even risked having the old man and others secretly infiltrate the Nine-Nations Alliance to search for Han Li's tracks.
At that time, Han Li had long since reached the Scattered Star Seas. The matter naturally came to nothing.
It was then that the old man had seen Han Li's portrait, which was why he recognized him with such shock now.
Now, Han Li was filled with perplexity. He wasn't so narcissistic as to believe that Dong Xuan'er liked him and was therefore sending people to search for him persistently. There was likely something peculiar going on.
Unfortunately, the black-robed old man held a low position and had no information about it.
After thinking for a moment, Han Li still couldn't figure out Dong Xuan'er's reason for looking for him. He shook his head and pushed the matter to the back of his mind.
Regardless of why Dong Xuan'er sent people to find him or what her intentions were back then, many years had passed, and it likely no longer mattered. Furthermore, with his current status as a Nascent Soul cultivator, he had no need to concern himself with it.
Thinking of this, Han Li briefly dealt with the bodies of the Ghost Spirit Sect cultivators, glanced in the direction of Huangfeng Valley's original sect, and then left the Taiyue Mountain Range.
Unbeknownst to Han Li, just as he was eliminating Yu Hong, in a secluded meditation chamber at the former site of the Hidden Moon Sect, a gaunt, distinctive-looking cultivator in black robes, who had been meditating with closed eyes, suddenly frowned and sighed deeply. He reached into his embrace and pulled out a dull, lusterless bone tablet.
The black-robed cultivator toyed with the bone tablet. After a moment, he slightly narrowed his eyes, and a hint of severity flashed across his face.
After a while, he stood up and walked out of the meditation chamber.
Passing through a long corridor, the black-robed cultivator entered a large hall. He sat expressionlessly on a stone chair in the center of the hall. Then, white light flickered in his hand, and a small bronze bell appeared from seemingly nowhere.
With a resounding "Dong!" the black-robed cultivator casually shook the bell. Its humming chime was deep and lingering, its sound traveling an unknown distance.
Afterward, he put away the small bell and sat blankly on the chair, remaining silent.
But a moment later, three Golden Core cultivators, two men and one woman, rushed out from several side doors of the hall. With solemn expressions, they stood below the old man, each showing deference.
"Just now, the spiritual light on your sixth junior brother's life tablet extinguished. It seems he met a tragic end at someone's hands. Although I don't know the exact circumstances, no one under my Soul Fragmentation Sect can die without explanation. The few of you, find that culprit and bring him to me alive. I want to see who this esteemed individual is!" the black-robed cultivator said calmly, as if issuing a trivial instruction.
"Understood. The three of us will attend to it immediately," the three male and female cultivators replied in unison, startled at first but then bowing their heads.
"Good! I hope that when I summon you all next, the culprit will already be imprisoned in the Immortal Confinement Dungeon." The black-robed cultivator, who was the Soul Fragmentation Daoist of the Ghost Spirit Sect, nodded. Without another word, he rose and exited the hall.
Only the three Golden Core Soul Fragmentation Sect disciples remained in the hall.
"Fifth Junior Sister, immediately send a transmission talisman to the Taiyue Branch Hall to see if they're aware of what happened to Sixth Junior Brother. If not, have them immediately dispatch personnel to investigate the culprit's whereabouts. Junior Brother Que! You have good relations with the hall masters of the other branch halls. See if they can send people to check if any unfamiliar high-level cultivators have appeared in Yue Country recently. As for us, we will each send capable disciples to investigate Sixth Junior Brother's last known location and look for any clues. Once any news comes back, the three of us will set out together to apprehend that person. After all, if they could kill Sixth Junior Brother, their cultivation must not be low, so it's better to be careful," the robust cultivator in black clothes, one of the three, said methodically after a moment of thought.
The other two were a woman in her thirties, still graceful, and a scholarly man in brocade robes, exuding an air of refinement.
Hearing this, the woman smiled faintly and agreed. The scholarly man in brocade robes, however, frowned slightly, looking a bit troubled, and only reluctantly nodded after a moment.
"Junior Brother Que, I know your relationship with Sixth Junior Brother was ordinary, even somewhat discordant. However, this matter was personally ordered by Master. If you fail to accomplish this, you know the consequences without me having to say it. Don't forget the punishments Second Senior Brother and Seventh Junior Brother received when they handled matters poorly," the black-clothed man said coldly, his eyes fixed on the scholarly man in brocade robes, seemingly still uneasy.
"How could that be! Although Sixth Junior Brother and I didn't get along, he's dead now, and this is a task from Master. I'll certainly do my utmost. Third Senior Brother, please rest assured," the scholar surnamed Que said, his face changing drastically as he let out a forced laugh.
"It's good that Junior Brother understands the severity. Let's split up and act," the black-clothed man said, his tone softening slightly.
Thus, the two men and one woman also left the hall, each proceeding with their respective tasks.
Several days later, Ghost Spirit Sect cultivators indeed followed the tracks of the vanished individuals and found the place where Han Li had eliminated them. After some investigation, Han Li's original cave dwelling was exposed.
Upon receiving the news, the three Soul Fragmentation Sect members personally led a group to the Taiyue Mountain Range. The three of them appeared inside Han Li's old cave dwelling, standing before the large pit left behind after Han Li had relocated the Spiritual Eye Spring. The three exchanged bewildered glances.
Meanwhile, in another distant location.
Han Yunzhi and the woman surnamed Liu, along with several Spirit Beast Sect members, appeared atop a stretch of towering mountains. They hastily crossed this area and entered the territory of Yue Country.
